To be a christian in a postmodern world

«How are you to adress this world with the gospel of Jesus? You cannot just hurl true doctrine at it. You will either crush people or drive them away. That is actually not a bad thing, because mission and evangelism were never actually meant to be a matter of throwing doctrine at people's heads. They work in a far more holistic way: by praxis, symbol and story as well as what we think of, in a somewhat modernist way, as "straightforward" exposition of "truth". I am reminded, too, of the power of symbolic praxis to go beyond words when I think of one of the greatest ballerinas of all time. After one of her great performances somebody had the temerity to ask her what the dance meant. Her reply was simple and speaks volumes to us as we consider mission in the postmodern world. "If I could have said it," she said, "I wouldn't have needed to dance it."

We must therefore get used to a mission that includes living the true Christian praxis. Christian praxis consists in the love of God in Christ being poured out in us and through us. If this is truly happening, it is not damaged by the postmodern critique, the hermeneutic of suspicion. »

O foco dos cristãos

É muito bom quando alguém verbaliza por nós os pensamentos que nos assaltam a mente, mas que não conseguimos pôr por palavras. Foi isso que senti ao ler o texto que este poste recomenda. Senti que o autor deu vida não somente aos seus pensamentos, mas também aos meus e, provavelmente, aos pensamentos de outros cristãos que por vezes se sintam incomodados pelo orgulho daqueles que advogam uma doutrina cristã específica em detrimento de outras. A doutrina é importante, mas não é o principal. Quando nos ocupamos mais a defender uma doutrina do que a cultivar um cristianismo relacional, autêntico e movido pela graça, corremos o risco sério de transformar o cristianismo apenas numa religião. Somos salvos pela graça e não pela doutrina. Termino usando a mesma frase com a qual Brissos Lino começa o seu texto e reforçando a minha sugestão para lerem todo o texto:

“Cristo não foi essencialmente professor, legislador, mas ser humano, ser humano real como nós. Por isso, ele não quer que em nosso tempo sejamos alunos, representantes ou defensores de determinada doutrina, mas seres humanos, seres humanos reais perante Deus.”
